OUR MONTHLY READ

"An Uplifting Tale of Friendship, Courage, and Finding Home"

Duke takes readers on an unforgettable journey through the cobbled alleys and charming streets of Adenbury—a picturesque town hiding from big adventures. At the heart of this touching and beautifully written story is Duke, a clever and independent street cat with a heart full of longing.

Born into hardship, Duke has only known life on the streets: dodging danger, scavenging for scraps, and keeping his distance from humans. But beneath his cautious nature lies a soft-hearted dream—to find a home, safety, and someone to love him. Through vivid descriptions and emotionally rich storytelling, the first few chapters establish a powerful sense of atmosphere and character that draws readers in immediately.

From outwitting a suspicious cafe chef to escaping the clutches of the cruel animal control officer, this book is filled with suspense, humour, and unexpected kindness. Along the way, he forms deep friendships—most notably with Seamus, a misunderstood ginger stray, and Winston, a gentle and goofy dog with a heart as big as his ears.

Together, this unlikely trio reminds us of the power of standing up for what’s right, helping others even when it’s scary, and believing in the possibility of a better life. As Duke navigates bullies, hunger, and heartbreak, he also learns that love and trust are worth the risk.

The story is full of beautifully crafted moments that tug at the heartstrings. From Duke’s terrifying rooftop fall to his heroic rescue mission and tender recovery in the arms of the compassionate Amelia, Duke the Street Cat is a story of second chances—for animals and people alike.

With themes of resilience, acceptance, kindness, and the courage to be yourself, this is a perfect read for children, families, classrooms, and anyone who loves stories with heart.

5 Tips for Writing Your First Novel

Starting your first novel is exciting — and a little overwhelming. There’s a blank page staring at you, a million ideas buzzing in your head, and that little voice asking, “Can I really do this?”

The answer is yes, you absolutely can. And here are five gentle, practical tips to help you get started:

1. Start with the story you can't stop thinking about

Don’t chase trends — chase what lights you up. The best first novels are the ones that feel personal, passionate, and persistent. If the story keeps whispering to you when you’re trying to fall asleep, that’s the one.

2. Set small, achievable writing goals

Writing a whole novel can feel massive — but writing 300 words a day? Totally doable. Set realistic daily or weekly goals that build momentum without burning you out.

3. Don’t edit as you go

Let your first draft be messy. It’s supposed to be. Editing too early can kill your momentum. Focus on finishing — polishing comes later.

4. Create a space that invites creativity

Whether it’s a dedicated desk, a cosy corner, or a specific playlist, build a space (mental or physical) that helps you show up consistently and comfortably.

5. Share the journey — not just the result

Talk about your process, your challenges, and your small wins. It keeps you connected, builds community, and reminds you: you’re not alone in this.
